1. Jerk Chicken & Jerk Pork

Jamaica's most famous export, and the version you get roadside from an oil-drum grill is a different food entirely from what most jerk-seasoned chicken outside Jamaica tastes like — properly smoked over pimento wood, properly spicy, sold by the pound and chopped with a cleaver on the spot. 2. Ackee and Saltfish — The Actual National Dish

Not jerk chicken — this is Jamaica's official national dish. Ackee is a fruit that, when properly prepared, looks and tastes remarkably like scrambled eggs, cooked here with salted codfish, onions, and scotch bonnet pepper. It's most commonly eaten at breakfast. One important note: unripe ackee is toxic, which is exactly why it's never sold unprepared to tourists — order it from a kitchen, not a market stall, and you're completely safe.

3. Festival — The Dumpling You'll Crave

A slightly sweet fried dumpling, usually shaped like a small football, that's the standard side to jerk chicken and fried fish across the island. Simple, but genuinely one of the things visitors ask about most once they're home and can't find it anywhere else.

4. Patties — The Original Road Trip Snack

A flaky, turmeric-yellow pastry filled with spiced beef, chicken, vegetables, or shrimp — sold everywhere from gas stations to dedicated patty shops, and the single best food to grab on a driving day. Cheap, filling, doesn't need utensils, and every region has an opinion about whose patties are best.

Local tip: Keep a couple in the car on any long drive day — between Montego Bay and Kingston, or out to Portland for the beaches, patty shops are reliably spaced along the main routes and make a far better stop than a gas station snack aisle.

5. Escovitch Fish

Whole fried fish topped with a vinegar-pickled mix of carrots, onions, and scotch bonnet pepper — tangy, spicy, and one of the most distinctly Jamaican preparations on this list. 6. Bammy

A flatbread made from cassava, traditionally soaked in coconut milk and fried or grilled, and served as a side to fried fish. It has roots in Taino cooking that predate Jamaica's colonial history — one of the oldest food traditions still commonly eaten on the island today.

7. Blue Mountain Coffee

One of the most sought-after coffees in the world, grown in the mist-covered Blue Mountains east of Kingston. Where to Eat Near Montego Bay

Scotchies, just outside downtown Montego Bay, is the area's best-known jerk center — open-air, oil-drum grills, and a menu that's really just "how much jerk chicken or pork do you want." For patties and quick road-trip food, look for the patty shops along the main routes out of town rather than relying on hotel gift shops, which mark up significantly.

Where to Eat Near Kingston

Kingston is Jamaica's real food capital — more variety, more local spots, less tourist markup than the North Coast resort areas. Beyond that, Kingston's uptown area has a dense cluster of well-regarded Jamaican kitchens worth asking your Kennedy pickup driver about — they'll know what's good that week better than any list we could write from a distance.
