1. Documents (The Part People Get Wrong)

Your passport, obviously. Less obviously: a valid driver's licence you've held for at least a year — not a learner's permit, not a licence issued less than 12 months ago. We cover the full detail in our driving in Jamaica guide, but the short version: most visitors from North America, the UK, and Europe don't need an international driving permit, but they do need their actual home licence in hand at pickup, plus the credit or debit card used for the booking.

The mistake we see most often: travelers packing a photo of their licence instead of the physical card, or a licence holder under 21 assuming a rental will be no problem. Check the age and licence-history requirements before you fly, not at the counter.

2. Clothing for Actual Jamaican Weather

Light, breathable fabrics year-round — Jamaica sits around 80°F on average regardless of season. Pack for humidity, not just heat: cotton and linen over synthetic fabrics. Bring one light layer for the evenings, especially if you're heading into the Blue Mountains or anywhere at elevation, where it genuinely cools down after dark. A light rain jacket earns its space in the bag June through November.

3. Sun and Bug Protection

SPF 30 or higher, reapplied more often than you think you need to — the Caribbean sun is stronger than it feels with the sea breeze cutting the heat. Insect repellent matters more inland and in the evenings than right on the beach.

4. What to Keep in the Car

A phone mount and offline maps downloaded before you lose signal in more rural stretches. A reusable water bottle — it's easy to underestimate how much you'll want cold water on a full day of driving and sightseeing. And, per our best Jamaican food guide, keep a patty or two in the car on any long drive day; patty shops are reliably spaced along the main routes and beat a gas station snack aisle every time.

5. Money and Payment

US dollars are widely accepted at tourist-facing businesses, but small change and local shops often work better in Jamaican dollars — a mix of both covers you. Bring the actual physical credit or debit card used for your rental booking; it's typically required at pickup for the security deposit, and a different card usually won't be accepted in its place.

6. What to Leave Home

Heavy, non-breathable fabrics you won't wear in the humidity. Excessive jewelry or anything you'd be upset to lose at the beach.
